Moffett Air Show

When:
July, 2002
Where:
Mountain View, CA

The SNJ-5 attended the Moffett Federal AF airshow Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a static display.

I flew the AC to Moffett at 1700 Friday after dealing with a battery problem. The donated battery was the wrong battery so Thursday last week we contacted Aviall who promised to get a battery overnight. You guessed it! No battery Friday, they forgot to ship overnight. We got fresh electrolyte and quick charged the old battery which got us to Moffett.

Thanks to NASA ground support which provided a 28VDC GPU which got Marty Michaud home Sunday. The Moffett show was heavy in military acts: A10, F-18, and Super F-18, MC130/HH60 flybys, etc. Civilian acts included Jim LeRoy (Pitts), Eddie in the SS and another monoplane acro act, that was it.

Static display was OK, lots of NASA stuff and many military AC. SoCal had the F8F-2 (navy heritage flight) and the C-46F. The very interesting and rare H-21 banana helo was also on display. Our SNJ was parked with the warbirds which included 2 P-51Ds, P-51H, Jerry Gabbs AT6F and our friend Dan Dugan's T28B. Lots of folks showed interest in the SNJ-5.

We made valuable connections at this show with the Airshow.net folks and also a local a Warbird Airshow promoter, Kory Stendell. I believe the effort to attend Moffett and display our SNJ was worth the hassle.

Several GG Wing members attended the show and visited the SNJ-5 to chat.
